3/24/19 - Family Letter to Emma

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
My life has kind-of ended. Have you ever done something,
and when that's over, you have no Idea what to do any more.
I'm starting weights again, but I also started a project in the backyard
to clear the fire pit. But still, I have so much time on my hands now.
How's your life going right now.
Love for Emma from

Hyrum

Sweet Emma,
We got a funny picture/email today...something about slime in your hair as your initiation into your new ward?  Ha ha!  I LOVE hearing from people in your mission!  It makes you not seem so far away.  It has been a huge blessing to 'meet' different people you associate with from your mission.

Nick Medina got his call.  We went to watch him open it!  Birmingham, Alabama!  Luke Chandler's friends are getting their calls right now too.  Blake is going to Tonga and Nick is going to Tuscon, Arizona.  Eve is kind of freaking out that she is in the time of life when people her age are starting to get their calls.  She said that so many of her friends are being sent all over the world... a variety of places.  Luke will put in his papers soon.

Since the musical, Hyrum has been invited to 2 parties!  He has made some new friends.  These are really good kids that absolutely love Hyrum.  He still tries to hang with the boys in the neighborhood, but their interests are different.  He's still pretty tight with Logan though.

Mari was sick all week.  He sickness came back so we took her to the doctor.  She was home with influenza all week.  Monday will be her first day back to school.  Once she was feeling better I made her stay home a few more days because her system was weakened.  She didn't like being 'home schooled' last week!  She was sad.  She is one who really needs her friends.  Saturday I finally let her have a friend over.  She and her friend Becca were home alone for a few hours.  Sadly, they started talking about all the things that they were afraid of and they scared each other and started hearing things as their imaginations went crazy.

Eve is getting a special award at school at the 3rd quarter assembly.  "Here We Go" award as nominated by the SBO's.  She really needed that pick-me-up.  I'm happy for her.  She had a rough week this week with the car breaking down (it's okay now) and part of her cello broke (we got that fixed too).  She really misses you, that's for sure.   But, she's happy you are serving a mission.  She is still excited to go herself one day.

Dad and I had a fun overnight getaway to see the Boyz II Men concert in Park City.  It was the first dance club I've ever been to.  I bought a clubbin' shirt (but I then I realized that everyone was dressed regular...not like on TV).  Anyway, we were really close to the stage and had a great time!  I had a bit of a hard time with club 'personal space'.  It was so crowded that I couldn't even dance.  Luckily, not too many people were drinking, and the show didn't go too late (I'm too old to stay up past midnight).  My favorite part was watching Dad enjoy the show.  These guys were iconic in our teen years!  We sang along to the songs and it was so loud our ears couldn't even hear when we left.  We stayed at Zermott in Midway. The snow is finally starting to melt and the mountains are beautiful!

I'm proud of you.  I can't wait to hear about your temple trip!
I love you!

M,

Slime in the hair, huh?  When we saw the picture we all looked at each other and said "That sounds about right".  It  was good to get the pictures.  This is the first contact we have had from your current area.  It was good to see your smile.  We have been concerned for you and it did us good to see you glowing, even if you had slime in your hair.

We had the Ministering families over for our Ministering dinner.  We did our usual Soup and Sopapillas.  We had the Chandlers and the Richards over.  We are in the middle of March Madness and Luke asked if he could come late because of a big basketball game.  I told him he better come on time.  It came out as a bit of a threat.  When they came we had the basketball game on and I told them  it was a test.  It was interesting to see how these boys actively interacted with a game being played in a different zip code.  It got a little rowdy.  We went over to the Medina's and watched Nick open his call.  He is assigned to Birmingham, Alabama.  He seemed very relieved to know where he is going.  Luke will be submitting his papers soon.  He had a friend who got a call and was very disappointed on where he was called.  It was a bit of a spectacle and it got Luke thinking he wants to make his call opening a very private event.  His friend's Stake President suggests they request where they get assigned to serve and claims that they get what they want most of the time.  He requested Tonga and was assigned to Tucson, AZ.  He was obviously disappointed and had a large crowd to watch it happen.  There are some rumors about an announcement around missions this conference.  It will be interesting to see what changes we get this time around.

Mom surprised me with tickets to a Boys II Men concert.  We went to Park City for the concert.  I prefer concerts where I have a seat and this concert was more of a club atmosphere.  Standing the whole time.  It got crowded and hot.  It was a game of "claim your space and don't let anyone take it from you".  It got physical.  I tried to protect your Mom and it worked most of the time.  The guys can still sing.  I only knew half of the songs.  I was on a mission when they released an album and I did not get back into them when I returned.  When I returned home from the mission I found all my tapes and CDs have been sold by my younger brothers.  It took me a while to build my library back up.  Overall it was a great concert and we sang the songs we knew.  It was interesting to see that your Mom was singing many of the songs I did not know.  She was a little more into Boys II Men than she thought.  It got crazy when they pulled out several long stem roses and attempted to hand them out.  All these middle aged women began to rush the stage and it got crazy.  We spent the night at the Zermatt Resort in Midway.  We stayed there for the Dirty Dash a few years ago.  Mom and I felt bad again that we made you kids wait as long as we did while we ran the dash.  We got home on Saturday and watched Hyrum and the Teacher's basketball team win the Region Title.  Hyrum scored 8 points and had several rebounds.  Overall he did a great a job and we had a great weekend.

Keep up the good work kid.  We are excited that you get a chance to go to the temple this week.  Soak it in and make it count.

Love

Dad
