Hey Emma
My play is this week. I cant wait for it to be done.
the new mattresses still haven't come. I think I'm going to go into a
Coma when it comes. My costume is pretty cool.
I'm always tired. Girls are strange, and life is weird.
How's your week?
Love,

Hyrum

Sweet Emma,
I'm so excited to hear how you are liking your new area.  Are you finding your way around?  How do you like your new ward?  How is training going?  This week we got a surprise visit from a new Brazilian Elder Serving in our Stake, Elder Queitoz.  I sent a picture.  He is really nice.  We wanted to have them for dinner so Dad could smoke them some meat (he requested good meat and plain rice) but it didn't work out with our/their schedule this week.  We'll keep trying.  Elder Q  (hardly anyone can say his name so some call him Elder Lamoni) spoke very highly of you and your time together in the CTM.  He seemed to think it was cool to be in your house.  (I sent a picture).

This week was a bit hard because I got Strep and was down for a few days.  Mari was sick with a different virus.  I was concerned, hoping the rest of the family wouldn't get it because of Eve's Prom and Hyrum's Pirates.  Luckily, no one else got sick.  Eve looked so pretty for Prom (I sent pictures).  She seemed to have a really fun time with all the fun friends around.  She made sure she looked extra beautiful just in case Hayden noticed....and I think he did!  She seems to delight in making him squirm.  Poor guy seems to lose his words when she is around.  I hope he gets the courage to ask her out before he graduates.

Hyrum has been working so hard on Pirates of Penzance.  He looks/sounds really good.  (I will send pics/video clips next week).  I'm proud of his focus and patience as he rehearses the show.  We bought him a Jim Hensen type muppet pirate puppet to give to him on closing night.  He's such a fun guy!

Mari is learning dances/songs for her 5th grade program (about America).  She is in "The Hop" with poodle skirts.  She is excited because that is what she wanted.  Mari is having fun with all her friends.  This weekend she had a different activity with a different friend each night.  The only sad thing is that these friends, although they live close, they are outside OHMS boundaries (since the new boundary change) and will be going to the new Bluffdale Middle School.  Mari is the only one of her friends living inside OHMS boundary.  She was considering going to Southland for her 6th grade year just so she could meet some friends before middle school, but decided against it.  She fasted and prayed about it and decided to spend her 6th grade year with her current friends at Riverton Elem.  Luckily, Mari makes friends easily.

Dad has been working from home more now.  I like having lunch with him.  We had our Pioneer Dance training for the Ma's and Pa's this week.  Dad is such a great dancer.  Sister Wendy Butler taught us the dances we will learn on trek.  We have about 22 couples to be Ma's and Pa's.  It was fun to learn all these dances with these fun people from throughout the Stake.  We are very blessed to involved in Trek and with these special people!  I also LOVE working with Dad.  We make a great team!

Speaking of special people, today in Stake Conference, Andrea Sligting was called as the new Stake Relief Society President!  I am so excited for her.  She will do great! I called her that afternoon to tell her how much I support and sustain her! I told her I would pray for her and do whatever I could to support her.

Stake Conference was all about "Come, Follow Me", Missionary Work, and Serving/Loving Others.  Elder Roney was our visiting authority.  He said a few things I want to put on our wall at home:  "Turn into Someone who Loves Everyone"   and  "Become someone who lifts others.  Be thoughtful.  If we respond with love to those whom he puts in our path he will trust us enough to send us more people to lift and serve."  (these aren't direct quotes...just summaries of what I wrote down from his talk).

I have also had some personal growth.  I have found myself having a hard time doing ordinary things (like dishes, cleaning, weeding etc.)  because as soon as I get started in these kinds of things, I feel myself distracted with other things that seem more important (real-like YW, or perceived).  Anyway, as I was struggling with these things, I realized that I was not being humble enough.  I found myself thinking too highly of myself and my contribution to the things/people around me.  (I am ashamed that I struggle with this).  I have been praying to be more humble and concerned at home and in service to other people.  I find comfort that will all my responsibilities, my greatest responsibility is to our family.  If I give my best effort to our family, that will be enough.  I hope to get out of the mindset that I am too busy to help others.  I don't need to change the world, I just need to love and serve my family and those around me.  The Savior loved everyone individually.

I know the Savior loves you!  I love you too!
Have a wonderful week!

M,

I hope things have progressed in your new area.  Being sick can cause problems.  We are confident once you got better things will improve.  Do not forget that your best as a missionary in enough.  The Elders will do their best to lead and sometime will struggle to communicate with Sisters the need to improve.  They will struggle to encourage in a way that will lift and not discourage.  I'm sure you are doing great and your new Greenie is doing well to.  Try to be sensitive to her version of culture shock.  Maybe sharing some of the letter I sent you will help.

We almost had the missionaries over for dinner.  Elder Queitoz said he served with you in the MTC.   His Mission Mom calls him Elder Lamoni because she can't pronounce his name.   He saw the Brazilian flag and knew he must be in the right place.  I told them that if they get a dinner cancellation that they need to let us know and we would fix them up something nice.  Elder Godfrey is from Texas so I was planning to smoke something for him.  Elder Queitoz wanted rice, beans, and some chicken.  They wanted to come over on Saturday but it was Stake Conference and they wanted to come during our Leadership meeting.  They did not know it but they needed to be at that meeting too.  They did not get dinner that night.  We made them some PBJs and took it to the Adult session.  They missed most of that meeting too.  They had appointments scheduled most of Stake Conference.   We hope to try again soon.  I had it in my mind to smoke something so we smoked some ribs and had Nate and his family over.  We played a few games and attempted to keep the little kids happy.

Hyrum is in full Broadway mode.  His show is this week and he will not stop singing all the songs.  We are going to have a lot of support at his shows.  The show is assigned seating so we hope to have the hoard sitting together.  He seems very happy but tired.  The rehearsals are long and he gets home late but he seems happy.  We are eager to meet his theater friends.  He still likes to come home and chill.  We assume once the show is over he will want to start being more social.

Mom and Mari had a rough experience at Joanne's.  Mari had the day off and together they went to all the errands Mom had that day.  One trip was to Joanne's.  It was rainy ans snowy and Joanne's roof had some leaks.  They had tarps under these leaks and pipes to drain the water away.  Your Mom walked under one of the tarps and all the water it was holding fell on her.  She got no sympathy from the check-out clerk.  She had to come home and change before continuing her errands.  I convinced her to write a complaint to the Headquarters.

We had daylights savings this weekend.  Every time is comes around I think we need to move somewhere that does not have it.  Do you have to deal with it the Brazil?  Maybe we will move to Brazil.  Please let us know what your preference is around your release date.  We could come and get you or we could all go on a trip when you get back.  We are still trying to decide and are wanting to counsel with you on this.

I will not be here for your call tomorrow.  Remember that you have all it takes to be successful in Santana.  You are exactly what your new comp needs in a Trainer.  I'm excited to hear about your successes and your struggles.  This is all part of your story.  It will make you who you need to become.

Love

Dad
