9/16/18 - Family Letter to Emma

Sweet Emma,
How are you liking your new area?  That's cool that you took Brooklyn's place.  I wonder if the people think you are the same person (or sisters) because all blonde/blue-eyed girls look alike!😊  Is you new comp from Italy?  Her name sounds Italian.

I'm so happy about Fabio,  Francisca and Aryadene!  A family!!!!! I cried tears of joy when I read your letter.  I'm so thankful that everything worked out before you had to leave that area.  Tender Mercy!

This was a busy week with YW stuff:  YW Leadership Appreciation Dinner (I spoke about Trek Preparations so everyone could start shopping clearance sales on outdoor shoes/gear etc).  We also had to make cotton candy for the Harvest Fair (some were talking about the giant bag of cotton candy you guys made last year!), Harvest Fair:  They had karaoke.  Mari sang a song she is learning for COPA. She is quite the performer! Hyrum, Mari and Eve (with a group of friends) sang "Bohemian Rhapsody".  Eve really jammed and owned that stage!

Grandpa Dean was moved into a Care Center this week.  He is very weak, and sometimes falls asleep while we are visiting.  It's so sad to see him so weak and thin.  Grandma Charlene looks 20 years younger since he was moved.  She is still a dutiful wife and visits him regularly.  She is a good example of Christlike compassion and charity.  I'm proud of her!

Dad's leg/back seem to be doing better.  He has been very diligent with his stretches.  He has been working from home more often.  I like having him around.  Eve is having fun getting ready for Powderpuff.  Hyrum just had his "Hello Week" assembly.  Mari is excited because Riverton Elem. has hired a Drama Teacher.

Like Mari said, we are in wildfire season now.  There is a big fire burning in the mountains of Utah County.  At one point they had to close off the road that went to Nephi and people had to find a new way to Snow College.  Whitney Sutton's family is on pre-evacuation status.  She said that she isn't worried, she is just sick of the smoke.  We are still praying for rain.

Andy Allen spoke in our Sacrament Meeting today.  He is awesome!  He spoke about some things he learned on his mission and the importance of keeping the Sabbath Day holy.  He also said "There is no learning without love".  We have to love the people before they can learn.

I love you!  Thanks for the advise about the packages.  I have made arrangements to send your Christmas package with "Missionary Express".  Christie has used them before and said they are good.  I will be sending your package by mid-October for Christmas delivery.  If you think of anything else you want/need (besides the list you already sent), let me know by then.

Sending you a BIG HUG!!!!
💜Mom

M,

We are excited to hear that you have moved into the city.  We are very grateful you were able to see the baptism you had before you left.  We tell you experience of frustration, blessing, and then baptisms and everyone smiles and laughs.  All those who served missions understand.  I think it is hilarious that you are replacing Sister Bybee.  We wonder if anyone will notice that a Sister has been replaced.  You should have asked for one of her nametags, wear it to church and see if anyone noticed.  We are very interested to hear how the Ward and area are different from Saracoba.  Your new comp look Italian or at least has a Italian name.  Is she a native?

My back is feeling better.  I was able to go to work for a full day.  I do OK as long as I try to keep my back straight.  I have a few stretches that keep my back a bit more limber than before.   We have a lot of wildfires that are keeping the valley smokey.  We have had a lot of fires in California and Southern Utah that have kept everything smelling like a campfire.  There is a new fire south of Payson that we can see from the backyard.  We had see the smoking billowing high in the sky and the wind in blowing the smoke towards Heber.  Again, everything smells like a camp fire.  At Hyrum's football game yesterday was in Herriman and we saw the beginning and end of a large fire.  Someone was playing with firecrackers and ended up burning down 3 homes.  We saw the homes from about 4-5 miles away.  the fire began at the beginning of Hyrum's game and looked like it was out as we ended.  On the news a gal was saying she went to the store and came back to her home completely burned down.  Sad.  The fire south of Payson is still going strong.  We are hoping for rain to help put it out.

We are starting to create the training for Trek.  We created a role we call Story Tellers that will be the main liaison for the Wards.  We are hoping to provide them with stories that they will take to their Wards and try to get the kids ready for Trek.  We are a bit behind schedule in creating the training.  The Stake leaders have not decided on what stories they want to focus on and your Mom feels like it is up to her to determine what stories we should be using.  She is a bit overwhelmed.  We are hoping to get the training ready soon as we start training in October.

Social Media has been blowing up over potential changes coming next General Conference.  Elder Holland has been quoted saying their are more changes coming but President Nelson didn't think we could handle it all last Conference.  There are some rumors about how long our Sunday meetings will be.  We will have some changes to our youth programs with the end of Scouting.   There could be some changes to how Mutual works.  Is some areas there is thought that Sacrament meeting will be held by remote.  We can create Wards from many Districts and Branches that are either too far apart or live in areas we can't secure property.  This might be more for Wards in Africa than anywhere else.  I'm eager to hear what we get this Conference.

I'm excited for your new area.  there is always some excitement in being somewhere new.  Learn what you can from your new comp.  You might not have her for long.  Discouragement is not a helpful emotion.  Keep doing your best.  It will always be enough.  Do not get concerned about the fruits.  Scatter as many seeds as you can, the fruits will come.  You have many cheering for you.  You can't help but be awesome.  Just be awesome and don't worry about the other stuff.

Love ya kid,

Dad
